Fulcrum Point New Music Project, the presenting organization of cutting edge new music performances, offers on-going (unpaid) internships (minimum 3-months term basis) for college students and young professionals who are interested in acquiring hands-on experiences through their internships.

Basic Requirements

  • detail-oriented, hard workers with strong organizational skills
  • the ability to learn quickly
  • knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel

We currently offer three different internships:

Grants-Writing Internship


Overall Objective:
This internship is designed to learn about solicitation of both corporate and foundation support for a nonprofit cultural organization. Intern works directly with Development Director and/or Executive Director and other Fulcrum Point staff to assist in securing sponsorship and foundation contributions for Fulcrum Point New Music Project’s year round projects including concerts and educational initiatives.

Content:
  • Research in identifying funding prospects for the organization;
  • Assist in compiling materials needed for grant applications, as well as learning to write a grant
  • Help ensuring that all funders/sponsors requirements are met and prepare supportive documents/statistics for final reports
  • Help with drafting annual appeal letter, updating donors’ list and mailings.

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Interest in fundraising
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadline
  • Proficiency with Excel, Access & Word

Flexible hours: at least 16 hours a week.

Marketing + Events Management Internship


Overall Objective:
This internship is designed to give real-world experience in both marketing and events management working for a nonprofit cultural organization. Intern works under Fulcrum Point’s PR/Marketing Consultant(s) and other staff members to assist in audience development and implement show-specific marketing efforts during concert season.

Content:
  • Assist the PR/Marketing consultants in preparing marketing and press materials for distribution
  • Assist in outreach to all community centers, cultural institutions, colleges/universities, consulates as well as different ethnic groups to promote FPNMP’s concerts
  • Assist in maintaining direct mailing and email lists
  • Assist in organizing functions/events that serve to raise the organization’s visibility in order to attract renewable subscribers to expand our audience base
  • Assist in the planning and actual organization of functions/events
  • Update and maintain community, cultural and media outreach database
  • Assist in any marketing (internet-marketing) efforts in boosting tickets sales
  • Coordinate updates of FPNMP’s website
  • Draft & create content of email blasts and e-newsletters and schedule them to be sent on a regular basis to increase public awareness of the organization
  • Assist in all aspects of expanding FPNMP’s audience base
  • Skills & Qualifications:
  • Must have taken courses in marketing and event management
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Ability to meet a deadline
  • Proficiency with Excel, Access & Word programs
  • Strong familiarity with the Chicago area and exposure to the various cultural groups preferred.

Arts Administration Internship


Overall Objective:
This internship is designed to offer backstage production experience for live performances during the concert season and to provide clerical support for the full time staff. During the off-season, the intern will learn to handle general administration related work in the office. Also, Fulcrum Point on a year-round basis offers SOUND TRACKS – an educational outreach program for CPS students that the intern will be responsible for coordination.

Content:
  • Help with mailings, maintain database, and perform general office administration duties (email, filing, banking, etc.)
  • Assist with the coordination of all aspects of the Sound Tracks educational outreach program; main focus in communications with the schools related to the scheduling of the classes and updating content for the PowerPoint presentations and collecting teachers’ surveys/feedback for final analysis of the program
  • Provide support for researching and identifying potential funders
  • Compile materials needed for foundation grants
  • Create effective proposals for potential contributing organizations either for cash or in-kinds support
  • Work under direction of Fulcrum Point production staff to prepare for the productions of the concerts during Fulcrum Point concert season

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Art management or Business Management coursework preferred
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work under a deadline
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer/internet savvy
  • Valid driver’s license is required

Flexible hours: at least 24 hours a week.
