La Monte Young: American Iconoclast @85

In Partnership with The Art Institute, The MCA and Art Expo Chicago

“The Melodic Version of The Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer from The Four Dreams of China” is an 80-minute immersive multi-media improvisation. A seminal work of American Minimalism (1962), this rarely performed work places the audience in the center of a magenta hued acoustic space surrounded by eight trumpeters who create a hypnotic series of drones, canons, chords, and other-worldly harmonics through just intonation using only 4 notes. La Monte’s mystical music explores the space between the notes as well as the colors of the natural overtone series. Lighting by Marian Zazeela.
